Genotyping and Parentage checks Q and A

What is the difference between parentage check and animal genotyping?

All animals have a genotype, which is a description of their basic genetic material. Each parent contributes half of the DNA that makes up the animals genotype. When a parentage check is requested the calves’ genotype is compared to the genotypes of its sire and dam at 11 locations along its DNA. If there aren’t sufficient matches then the parent will be excluded as a parent of the calf. If the DNA matches then the parentage is confirmed.
