UK Genomic Evaluations

Male UK Genomic Evaluations Terms and Conditions (UK Consortium)

·        To be put forward for a UK Genomic PLI, all home-bred males will have to be registered in the Holstein UK herd book.

·        The UK Genomic PLI will be available at the tri-annual evaluation release date.

·       Males up to 15 months old may be put forward for an initial, Unofficial Evaluation for private use; their genotypes may be run on either the 19K or 80K chip.

·        If an unofficial GPLI has been requested, it will be recalculated until the bull reaches 15 month of age.

·        This Unofficial Genomic Evaluation is not recognised as official and must not be used for marketing the bull genetics in any form, other than the sale of the animal itself. This Unofficial Genomic Evaluation shall not be published officially by either DairyCo or Holstein UK and will not be used by any participating Milk Recording Organisation. Therefore the Unofficial Genomic Evaluation will not appear on any official listings or on pedigree certificates.

·         When the bull reaches 15 months of age, the Unofficial Genomic Evaluation will cease to be supplied and for bulls that require a genomic evaluation after this, the Official Fee needs to be paid.

·         Bulls for which only an Initial Fee has been paid, and who are over 3 years of age and have less than 20 progeny registered by Holstein UK, will automatically receive an Official Genomic Evaluation, which will be updated with each tri-annual official genomic evaluations.

·         Males may be put forward for an official evaluation and must be tested on the 50K or 80K chip. This Official Genomic Evaluation is permitted to be used to market the bull’s genetic qualities and will be used in official UK bull rankings, will contribute to the International GMACE (expected from August 2013), and will be used on official pedigree certificates and milk recording records.

Bull Genotypes submitted for genomic evaluations are subject to the following terms and conditions:

(a)          Bull genotypes, other than those submitted by an International or UK Genomic partner, will have to be submitted via Holstein UK;

(b)          UK bred bulls will have to be registered with Holstein UK to be eligible

(c)          The Initial Fee shall be paid to obtain an Unofficial Genomic Evaluation

(d)          When the bull reaches 15 months of age, the Unofficial Genomic Evaluation will cease to be supplied and for bulls that require a genomic evaluation after this, the Official Fee needs to be paid.

(e)          The Official Fee shall be paid prior to receiving an Official Genomic Evaluation

(f)          Bulls for which only an Initial Fee has been paid, and who are over 3 years of age and have less than 20 progeny registered by Holstein UK, will automatically receive an Official Genomic Evaluation, which will be updated with each tri-annual official genomic evaluations.

(g)          Fees will be collected by Holstein UK on behalf of both DairyCo and Holstein UK to support the running and development of the UK genetic and genomic evaluation systems.
(h)          There will be no refund of fees, even if the test results do not work to the requester’s satisfaction.

(i)           If it is discovered that semen has been sold in the UK from a bull that previously obtained an Unofficial Genomic Evaluation based on an Initial Fee payment and the Official Fee has not been paid at the time the first semen was sold, the Official Fee must be paid plus a £1000 late fee. In addition the owner(s) will lose the right to genotype males for an indefinite period, and for a minimum of one year and until all fees due on all bulls are paid

Female UK Genomic PLI

Any UK bred and owned female animal that is in a herd participating in a UK ICAR milk recording system run by NMR, CIS or UDF, and whose data is used as part of DairyCo’s genetic evaluations, may be put forward for a UK Genomic PLI and UK Genomic type; their genotypes may be run on either the 19K or 80K chip. There will not be an additional evaluation charge for these females.

Additional data

All animals tested on the 19K or 80K chips will have additional diagnostic tests reported as standard. These include Fertility Haplotypes, DUMPS and BLAD. A full list is available upon request from Membership Services.

It is possible for additional chargeable tests to be requested at the initial test or at a later date. If requested in the future, there is no need to resample the animal for DNA. These tests include CVM, Brachyspina, Beta Casein A2, Coat colour, indirect Polled test. A price list is available upon request from Membership Services.

How can I request a Female UK genomic evaluation?

If you wish to have a female tested for UK Genomic PLI, you will need to apply for a DNA sample kit. You can do this by phoning Membership Services on 01923 695200 or emailing susanboughton@holstein-uk.org

You will be given the cost of the test, which will be invoiced when the sample is received.
A sample kit will be sent out to you, which you must send back to Holstein UK, along with the signed
paperwork. You can request either the 19K or 80K test for your animals.

How can I request a registered male UK genomic evaluation?

If you wish to have a registered male tested for UK Genomic PLI, you will need to apply for a DNA sample kit. You can do this by phoning Membership Services on 01923 695 200 or emailing susanboughton@holstein-uk.org

You will be given the cost of the test, which will be invoiced when the sample is received.

A sample kit will be sent out to you, which you must send back to Holstein UK, along with the signed
paperwork. You can request either the 19K or 80K test for your animals.

Although your male animal may have been parentage tested, a different DNA genotype is required for genomic evaluations, therefore you must send in a new sample for analysis.

Can I request an unregistered Male UK genomic evaluation?

All males put forward for a UK genomic evaluation must be registered in the Holstein UK herd book and all male calves must be parentage checked before they can be registered.

When you register your male calf you may request a UK genomic evaluation at the same time. You will need to send two samples of DNA, as the DNA will need to be sent for parentage and for evaluation on your choice of analysis on a 19K or 80K chip. You can do this by phoning Membership Services on 0800 980 8565.

You will be given the cost of the tests, which will both be invoiced for when the samples are received.

Sample kits will be sent out to you, which you must send back to Holstein UK, along with the signed paperwork. You can request either the 19K or 80K test for your animals.

When will I be able to have a parentage test as part of my UK genomic evaluation?

Right now the UK Evaluation Centre cannot perform a parentage check, but they are working towards doing this for us, and they hope to be offering parentage verification within the next couple of months.

Only animals with parents in the North American Alliance Genomic database can be parentage checked through genomics in this way. So in the future if your animal’s dam and sire have genomic evaluations, the animal can be parentage checked when put forward for UK Genomic evaluation. If the sire has a genomic evaluation, you will be able to send Holstein UK a DNA sample for the dam and the calf, and they will be analysed on your choice of either the 19K or 80K chip.

When will I be able to request genomic tests over the Internet?

Soon genomic tests may be requested when registering through the Holstein UK web site, members section, TELREG, WebReg and in Your Herd when calving your cow.

How can I apply for a male GTPI?

To apply for a male GTPI, the male must have already received a UK genomic evaluation. Once you have this for your bull, you can request a GTPI by phoning Membership Services on 01923 695 200 or emailing susanboughton@holstein-uk.org.
