UK Team Announced for the 2019 Open Junior Show

Holstein UK are delighted to be taking four Holstein Young Breeders to Cremona, Italy, to compete in the 8th annual Open Junior Show.

The teams of two senior and two junior competitors comprise of:

  • Senior Team: Ben Coates and Steven Harris
  • Junior Team: Iwan Thomas and Vikki Murch

Teams from across Europe will travel to Cremona to compete against each other on the international stage from Wednesday 23rd – Saturday 26th October. The esteemed Open Junior Show is credited for providing an extremely high level of competition in its clipping, showmanship and stock judging elements and many HYB members have great success at the show in the past. The event, now in its eighth year, also offers a fantastic opportunity for young breeders to socialise and network with like-minded individuals, as well as getting a feel for European competition. Hosted by ANAFI, the competition will take place in the lead up to the 68th National Holstein Show.

The team will arrive at the showground on the Wednesday and be assigned a heifer to get familiar with before the clipping contest on Thursday morning. Friday will see the competitors go head-to-head in the main ring in the showmanship competition. Other elements include stock judging and a technical quiz with competitors being scored throughout and prizes awarded for the best individual and team performances.

Meet the team here

Senior Competitors

Steven Harris (Cornwall HYB Club)

Steven has been in HYB for nine years and his highlights include winning the HYB Senior Linear Competition at the 2018 Weekend Rally and finishing in the top five ABAB Showmanship classes in 2017 and 2018. Steven works on his family farm where they milk 200 head and he has been investing in some great cow families to develop the bloodlines. Steven is really looking forward to competing in Cremona and is hoping to further develop his skills and learn from others.

Ben Coates (Yorkshire HYB Club)

Ben has been an HYB member for the past ten years and has enjoyed all aspects of being part of the Club. His calves were placed as Champion and Reserve Champion in the 2019 Yorkshire Calf Show and saw success at this year’s Weekend Rally. Currently working on the family farm alongside his parents and grandparents, going forward, Ben would like to continue improving the herd and has future aspirations to win a Premier Breeder award. In Cremona, Ben is looking to gain more experience in show preparation and will be a great addition to the team as he is a good team player.

Junior Competitors

Iwan Thomas (South Wales HYB Club)

Iwan has been involved with HYB since he was ten and has seen great success at junior level. Highlights include winning the National Stock Judging Competition for the past three years and being placed as Champion Handler at the 2019 South Wales Calf Show. Iwan is currently working on his family farm and hoped to travel and work abroad to further his experience. As part of the Cremona team, Iwan hopes to further develop his skills, knowledge and understanding of shows.

Vikki Murch (Devon HYB Club)

Vikki has been in HYB for seven years and is extremely passionate about the dairy industry and showing cattle. A particular highlight for Vikki was coming third in the B Team’s clipping element of this year’s Field-2-Foto competition with an impressive score. Vikki is really looking forward to Cremona and hopes to gain more experience in calf preparation and handling. Currently studying for her GCSE’s, Vikki would like to go to agricultural college and then secure a job within the dairy industry in the future.

Cerys Petrie, HYB Coordinator, comments, “We are thrilled to be taking such a strong team to this year’s competition. The team consists of four outstanding HYB members and it really is a fantastic opportunity for them. Holstein UK would like to wish them the very best of luck and we are excited to see how they get on. Don’t forget to keep an eye on social media for updates!”
