A weekend to party and perform like there's no tomorrow

As we look forward to the HYB Weekend Rally, we take a look at what makes the event one of the highlights of the HYB calendar year.

Young breeders from across the UK are set to descend on Cumbria for the Border & Lakeland Club's HYB Weekend Rally from 2nd to 4th August for an exciting range of activities involving learning, development and plenty of fun!

Besides the competition aspect of the weekend, competitors will also take part in practical workshops and mini competitions. A major goal of HYB is to enhance the knowledge and understanding of cattle breeding and management in the next generation. Those attending also have the opportunity to meet other passionate young breeders, network, and form friendships.

On Friday 2nd August, HYB members will arrive at Shap Wells Hotel, where there will be an 'opening ceremony' of the B&L games where clubs will dress in various sports, inspired by the Olympics, before partying the night away. A highlight of the Rally each year is seeing which club has been the most creative with their fancy dress, and we’re looking forward to seeing some imaginative outfits.

On Saturday, young breeders have the opportunity to compete in the highly anticipated National Reasoned Stock Judging and Linear Assessment competitions at Wormanby Holsteins, thanks to the kind permission of the Hodgson family.

Once the competitive element of the day is complete, members will take part in the B&L Games where they will compete in a range of fun sporting activities to win points for their Clubs. A number of educational workshops will also take place throughout the day.

The closing ceremony on Saturday night promises to be a great opportunity for the young breeders to relax and enjoy themselves at a black tie dinner, with live music provided by The Nashville Heat.

Another feature of the weekend is the ‘Field-2-Foto’ competition which will take place at Borderway Auction Mart on Sunday 4th August. Teams of five are assigned a calf, which is halter broken and essentially clean. The calves are supplied by local herds and picked at random during the weekend.

The team starts by putting their best clipper forward, whose score not only counts towards the team total, but also puts them in the running to win the prestigious National Clipping Competition. In the next step, two members wash the calf, before the rest of the team participates in the final preparation, and one member participates in the showmanship portion of the competition. The team then collaborates to photograph the calf as a finale.

National HYB Coordinator for Holstein UK Naomi Lewis commented, "The Weekend Rally is always a highlight of HYB events. It is so important that our young members can get away from their farming lives to share positivity and passion with their friends and other young breeders. Members leave the event with valuable knowledge and lifelong friendships after participating in a variety of activities, learning opportunities, and meeting new friends. Our objective at HYB is to encourage enthusiasm among the future of our industry and to provide support to the young breeders to assist them in their future careers.”
