Shropshire Holstein Club - December Newsletter

We start with congratulations to the winners of our 2020 Virtual Calf Showcase which involved members sending in a two minute video of a calf born between 1/04/19 and 31/5/2020. Whilst we did not get as many entries as we hoped for, we did see a very high standard of presentation skills and an extremely high standard of calves featured, as pointed out by our Master Judge Mr Michael Yates of Logan Holsteins who placed the calves in the following order:

Champion – Alderbarrow Niaho Brenda 18/04/2019 (B & L Whitfield)
Reserve – Sweetpea Crushy Sky 02/12/2019 (Isla Arrel)
Honourable Mention – Budjon LB Sublime 07/09/2019 (Pippa Tudor)

The full results are as follows:

Alderbarrow Nihao Brenda, B & L Whitfield and son
Sweetpea Crush Sky, Isla Arrell
Budjon LB Sublime, Pippa Tudor
Toi Toi BC Unix Boegin, Toi Toi genetics & Bluechip Genetics
Knowlesmere Crush Diamond, Toi Toi Genetics, Nobold Holsteins and Bluechip Genetics
Bentleyford Boxcar Teresa, Rob Higgins

We are very grateful to Chris and Grace Brown who very generously sponsored this competition and thanks to Phil Arrell our HYB Co-ordinator who organised the event.

One piece of very good news to report is the marriage of Philip McDowell and Kate Thomasson. This would make a very good TV programme as they planned and did the happy deed in just three days before lockdown. However, I am still awaiting the arrival of a piece of cake, but it will be in the post no doubt. Congratulations and very best wishes to Mr and Mrs McDowell at Willoughbridge.

The President’s Medal has recently been judged and we congratulate all the entrants in this very prestigious award. We are very proud to see Rob Higgins in the final three who is a leading light in our HYB section and doing great things in promoting his family’s Bentleyford herd.

Plans for the Winter include our Winter Herds Competition which we hope to arrange for early 2021 just as soon as we know what we need to achieve to arrange it safely.

While we are all still restricted in holding any Club activities, we are ready to go with our spring show which is all in place and can easily be set in motion. We look forward to welcoming you all here to Shropshire as the show will include celebrating Mr Rob Clare being elected as the Holstein UK President, which we did plan to hold at the 2020 AGM.

One event for your calendar is the Shropshire HYB Rally which we hope to be able host from 13th to 15th August 2021. This event was planned for 2020 and will take place at Harper Adams University with events including Field-2-Foto at Shrewsbury Auction Mart on the Saturday, followed by the National stock judging classes, again at Shrewsbury Auction Mart, on the Sunday. Evening entertainment and other team activities will also be featured and announced as soon as we can, subject to movement restrictions.
