No Annual Dinner is being held in 2023, but smaller social events, a Christmas Meal was held for 40 members and a very enjoyable evening had by all, followed by a couple of worthy presentations.

The Staffordshire Holstein club committee had a discussion about the Peter Appleby award and who to present it to. The Trophy, in the form of a prestigious silver tray is awarded to a member who has given an outstanding contribution to the club or the breed as a whole.

At meeting it was proposed that this year's recipient of the trophy would be Sue Cope, for her outstanding contribution to the society as a whole and to The Staffordshire Club during her lifetime.

The Club had great pleasure in welcoming Tom Cope, Sue’s father, and her family to the Christmas Meal, and the presentation was made “In memory of Sue Cope”, understandably the family appreciated the recognition for Sue and her commitment to The Society.

Peter Cotton and Lizzie Bradley were awarded the Holstein Club awards for their commitment and all the work that they do for the club, especially the HYB section. Peter has won ever age category for stock judging. Winning junior in 2014 then intermediate in 2021 and finally winning senior in 2022 the club went on to to congratulate Peter for such an outstanding achievement. Both Peter and Lizzie support the senior club at all events.

The club has the Winter Classic Herd competition is going ahead in January 2023, and has new entrants this year, taking it to 15 entries, which is very encouraging support for the club. The club is welcoming Blaise Tomlinson from East Midlands and we appreciate the time he is committing to the competition.

Thank you to our 2 sponsors for the Herd Competition, E.J. Holdcroft & Son of Blythe Bridge Mill; and Feeding Solutions – Independent advice on feed management.

A joint open stock-judging evening with Shropshire and Western Clubs, arranged for Friday 9th June, 2023, thank you to a young member Mark Whitehurst for hosting the event. 2 Further evenings being planned for the HYB. Our Master Judge is Hefyn Wilson.

Good News around for many of our members this last year, firstly congratulations to The Overseal Herd on Breaking 1000Kg and Peter has detailed the background to their Herd’s achievement.

Breaking 1000Kg

The Overseal herd of J.E & E.M Marshall have joined a very elite club by reaching the goal of officially recording over 1000kg of combined fat and protein per cow over the last recording year.

The 183 cows & 52 heifers averaged 13,517@ 4.23F & 3.23P adding up to 1007 kg per animal. Milked 3 times a day, this TMR fed herd includes 15 EX and 62 VG cows with four currently over the 100T lifetime yield. The oldest of these is Overseal Patsy 288 Ex94 7E who has yielded 125t so far just 80 days into her 10th lactation. This amazing Gillette Jordan daughter has held to her first service in every lactation to date and is due to be served again shortly.

Woodside farm is very much a family run business with brother and sister, Pete & Janet and Janet’s son Sandy all involved and 94-year-old “Granny” Mary still keeping a keen eye on progress, Pete Marshall.
