Edition 1 - 2024 - South Wales

End of September saw the All Breeds Club calf show being held at the Showground Carmarthen. It was great to see so many young members competing, full of enthusiasm and enjoying the experience.

The South Wales HYB were well represented at the ABAB National Calf show in October with many members and calves at the high end of the classes. One red card came back to Carmarthenshire with Anwen Thomas of the Gatrog herd winning the Senior handler class. The club also received second place in the Club’s Choice Stand Competition. Congratulations to all members that took part.

Congratulations to everyone that exhibited at The Welsh Dairy Show, great to see a large number of spectators and trade stands present. Just shows how many of us rely on the dairy cow for a living. Although the heavens opened, it didn’t damper the atmosphere, typical Welsh weather! Congratulations to our very own Meurig James who was awarded for his services by the Farmers Union of Wales at the Welsh Dairy Show.

A lovely Harvest thanksgiving service was held at St.Mary’s Church Cwrt Henry on October 19th. The welcome we had afterwards back in Derimoelion was tremendous and a huge thank you to Robert, Diane and Frances for their kind hospitality.

Congratulations to Evie Tomlinson of the Allstar Herd and Evie Tomlinson Photography for being chosen to travel to New Zealand and joining the ringside media at the New Zealand Dairy Event. Evie will travel to Australia before NZ to work alongside Bradley Cullen at International Dairy Week. Owner of Evie Tomlinson Photography, she has been mentored in recent years by Claire Swale, travelling and picturing in Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium. Enjoy the experience Evie.

Congratulations to Frances Evans of the Deri Herd for being asked to join the Semex Conference in mid-January. Frances manages a herd of high yielding 550 pedigree Holstein cows. In 2016, Frances attended Cornell University in New York to undertake a 1-year management program. We look forward to hearing all about it Frances.

Congratulations to Christie Baker of the BB Herd for being chosen for the Australian Exchange. Out of a number of very strong applicants, Christie has been selected as the winner for her passion and enthusiasm for the HYB, and the dairy industry as a whole. Christie works at home on the family farm milking 300 pedigree Holsteins. Best wishes to you Christie on your travels.
