South Wales

Holstein South Wales was formed in 1999 through the amalgamation of the existing Friesian (1945) and Holstein(1970) clubs.

The club area covers the counties of South Wales controlled by an executive committee that meets bimonthly in the Carmarthen area.

To date several society presidents have been produced for all three societies extending back to the legendary J E Bennion of Stackpole who worked tirelessly for the society including arranging the historic Peterborough sale of imported Dutch animals-missing the sale itself due to one of three serious heart attacks! Highlights for South Wales breeders were society shows and sales especially the Reading bull sale which was keenly supported, it encouraged breed improvement amongst members leaving a gap that as been impossible to fill. From the outset Show and sales for club members at Carmarthen have been an important feature in the calendar of events changing from a seasonal to annual then to the current monthly slot. Breed records were set at several November sales in the 1970's by members of the noted Grove families which produced Royal Show champions including the last male champion Deri Agha Khan. Lately breeders have concentrated on Welsh events with the Royal Welsh an important shop window for members who celebrate judging day by the famous "At Home" on the Holstein Stand.
