Edition 1 - 2024 - South West Scotland

South West Scotland Dairy Show attracted a full ringside of spectators to see a great display of 62 dairy cattle from regular and new exhibitors, as well as 22 young handlers, judged by Euan Lawrie, from Grangehall Holsteins, Lanark. With numbers up and a packed ringside, the show, which is supported by 33 sponsors, was a huge success.

Winning the first class of the night was Sophie Brown in the junior showmanship, leading Meiklefirth Tatoo Erica. While, in a hotly contested senior handling class Katlyn McCormick emerged top of the line.

First time exhibitors T & M Irving from Canonbie took the Holstein Championship honours with their third calved daughter of Sandy-Valley Scenario. Fresh in July and averaging 3.7 milkings a day through the robot she is currently giving 60 litres. In her second lactation she gave 11,600 litres at 4.14%BF and 3.21%P.

Standing Reserve Champion was Logan Rubels Seisme VG88, the winner of the junior cow class from Brian and Michael Yates. Fresh with her second in July, giving 50 litres a day. She stood first and Reserve Champion at Dumfries Show and Reserve Red & White Champion at UK Dairy Day 2023 and was unbeaten in her class as a two-year-old in 2022.

Commenting on the show, judge Euan Lawrie said: “South West Scotland Dairy Show is a very well organised and run show, the entry numbers and quality of entries was fantastic. The enthusiasm and quality of the youngster was great to see and bodes well for the future. My championship line-up shows what I like, well balanced, correct animals with strength and dairyness, quality udders and great legs and mobility.”
