2nd April saw the appearance of the Giant Easter Bunny at Andy and Jane Whittaker’s home at Ivy House Farm.  Here, twenty younger members enjoyed doing crafts, playing games and of course the annual Easter egg hunt.

Our Spring season started with an evening visit to David Maddocks and family at Wyndford Wagyu, formerly the home of Wyndford Holsteins. Over 200 members and friends gathered to see and learn all about rearing and marketing Wagyu beef. Philip Maddocks aided by Jess Edwards and her team put on an exceptional evening visit which was enjoyed by all. It was also a special chance to meet David Maddocks who very sadly passed away shortly afterwards and will be fondly remembered for his great knowledge and hospitality and for his unwavering support of this Club. David was very proud of all of his family, and we are indebted to Richard and Philip for their very generous help and support and wish them continued success in all their ventures.

15th May was the date for the much-anticipated visit to Calcourt Holsteins at Leighton near Welshpool. Over 200 members and friends attended this visit, the home of Fraser Jones and his family who continue to develop Maurice and Rob Jones’ long association with dairying here at Calcourt. Here they now milk 1500 Holsteins on two sites. At Lower Leighton they milk 1300 with a 72-point GEA Rotary, with a focus on cow comfort and herd health demonstrated by producing 11,500 litres per cow. This is achieved by producing whole crop Wheat, Maize, grass silage and all home-grown cereals.

We started the Show season with the Shropshire Show at Shrewsbury with Mike Roberts again winning the interbreed Championship, repeating his success with Nobold Deman Janie. A great achievement which can only be surpassed by her defending this title next year.

The Club is very pleased to support the Shropshire show and enjoyed hosting the Judges, Stewards and Volunteers for lunch and refreshments. We have a great team who continue to step up and provide such much-admired hospitality.

The Higgins family at Bentley Ford Farm hosted our first Stock Judging evening and presented two outstanding classes of youthful cows, which our Judge Will Horsley from Woodcatt Holsteins in Cumbria placed and gave excellent reasons. We are very grateful to Will who made the long journey down and we wish him every success in the future.

We held our Summer Herds competition in early June, very ably judged by Andrew Birkle from Winchat Holsteins. Over the three days Andrew visited 18 herds and eventually announced his Champion Herd as Hallon Holsteins for James Tudor and family.  We wish them well in the next round. Andrew made his announcement at another very successful herd visit at Richard and Isobelle Robinson’s new dairy set up at Petsey near Market Drayton. This is the new home of the Phildor Herd of Holsteins where 200 cows are housed and milked in a state-of-the-art new dairy set up which includes Fulwood Robotic milkers and state of the art building design, along with very modern slurry handling systems. A gathering of over 100 members and friends enjoyed a very interesting visit.

Our second Stock judging evening was at Mark Whitehurt’s Folemill Holsteins which was a combined event with Western and Stafford Holstein Clubs. A very large attendance saw three classes of cows and heifers paraded, which received much praise, especially from our Judge, Hefyn Wilson from Tregibby Holsteins and Jerseys who was very impressed with the cattle before him and congratulated Mark for having achieved so much in such a short time farming on his own account and gathering and developing such an impressive herd of cows.  Our winners were Tom Morgan who topped the HYB section just ahead of Sioned Morris and Pippa Tudor. Brent Crothers defended his title from last year just pipping Phil Arrell, with Tim Preston a close third. Ladies winner was Jane Whittaker who just pipped Alison and Helen Stevenson into second and third.
