Edition 3 - 2023 - Suffolk

Over recent weeks, members have enjoyed several events in our programme.

In early April, 50 members and guests enjoyed an excellent meal and get-together at Halesworth Golf Club for our annual dinner and presentation of awards.

Our stock judging evening this year took place at Wigboro Holsteins by kind permission of the Smith Family. John Cawston (Poringland) was our master judge for the night for the three classes. Alice Shipley was the winning junior stock judger of the night, whilst Andrew Mallison scooped the senior prize.

The Suffolk Show this year was definitely a case of quality over quantity of Holsteins on show. Needless to say, judge Lindsay Fleming put the exhibitors through their paces and the champion Holstein was tapped out as Smith Farms Wigboro Outlay Beechnut with C.R. Cawston, Poringland Bracelet 66 in reserve.

The calf show the next day saw a good number of calves and handlers forward with Alfie Dyer (Holben) becoming champion handler and Laura Marsh (Airfield) as reserve. In the calf championship, it was a clean sweep for Holben Holsteins with Holben Awesome Africa Red as champion and Holben Sidekick Bunny in reserve.

Just a few days before our herd competition, members visited Somerleyton Farms for an evening farm walk. Livestock manager, Sam Bales took members on a tractor and trailer tour of the farm’s Highland and Welsh Black cattle herds which are being grazed in a regenerative system and fit in amongst the other aspects of the farm and the grounds of Somerleyton Hall.
