Summer 2022 - Suffolk

Suffolk Holstein Club have enjoyed several events in the past six months. Like so many clubs, Covid has been a real stumbling block so the club has a smaller programme this year.

The year kicked off with our agm in January when those present welcomed a representative from the Medical Detection Dog charity as our guest speaker who told us of the varied work the dogs carry out in the medical field. In committee news, it was decided to keep the roles as the same with Matthew Cawston as chairman, Helen Reeve as secretary, Katie Smith as treasurer and Ava Malt as HYB coordinator.

Back in 2020, our annual club dinner was due to be held just as we went into lockdown so after a considerable break, a dinner was held in April. With a new venue, Halesworth Golf Club, and 50 members and guests, we enjoyed our first big get-together with excellent food and company. Here we awarded Claire Cletheroe, the HYB member of the year certificate.

Stockjudging took place in May by kind permission of the Adam’s family (Laurelmarsh) who presented three classes of cows and heifers for members to judge. Barry Daw (Bluegrass) was our master judge for the evening which saw John Smith topping the adult section and Alice Shipley awarded the HYB prize. Big thanks must also go to Protein Feeds for their continued support of the Club with refreshments. It was perfect stockjudging conditions - great cows, good company and a lovely sunny evening.

Just before the Platinum Jubilee weekend, the Suffolk Show was held at Trinity Park. Whilst the weather might have been pretty chilly, and numbers of cows down on previous years, the competition in the ring certainly warmed things up with a great show of top quality Holsteins and any other dairy breeds.

Judge, Luke Harris, tapped out his champion for the show as C.R. Cawston, Poringland Ina 2; with Smith Farms, Wigboro Wick Dyson Kate as reserve. Poringland Ina 2 went on to win the Dairy interbreed with Smith Farms,  Wigboro Wick Burdette Poker (Ayrshire) taking reserve honours. British Friesians were also well represented by Ava Malt who took the award for the interbreed group of three with herd mates of the Gemini herd.

The second day saw calves and handlers competing which saw the handling awards going to Claire Cletheroe (champion), Daniel Edwards (Reserve) and Ava Cawston (honourable mention). Winners in the calf classes led to Ava Malt’s Gemini Shield AA Milly Red 2 taking the champion spot with reserve going to CR Cawston and honourable mention also going to Ava Malt. Always a draw for the show goers, the calf show gave our youngest members the opportunity to show their handling skills and promote the Holstein breed of which all those competing did a fantastic job.

The next club event will be the herd competition, judged by Paul Thorne followed by Norfolk Show, and a social gathering to be held later on in the year.
